Question 10 of 10
What is the deepest lake in the world?
Why, in question 9: What is Brazil's largest biome?
The answer is the Amazon, which covers about half of Brazilian territory. The Cerrado is the second largest, with close to a quarter of the country.
Six biomes, very different landscapes
Brazil has six terrestrial biomes: Amazon, Cerrado, Atlantic Forest, Caatinga, Pampa and Pantanal. The Pantanal is the smallest, but it is one of the largest flooded plains on the planet.
The Amazon Rainforest is the largest tropical rainforest in the world and extends across nine countries. It is home to an enormous share of the known plant and animal species.
The Cerrado is called the cradle of waters, because rivers that feed several of the country's great river basins, such as the São Francisco and the Paraná, rise there.
The Caatinga is the only biome found exclusively in Brazil. During drought, the plants lose their leaves and look dead, but they turn green again a few days after the first rains.
The Atlantic Forest, which runs along the coast, is the biome where most Brazilians live and one of the most deforested: only small patches of the original forest remain. Even so, it remains among the regions with the most species on the planet.
