Why, for question 6: Which river discharges the most water into the sea?
The answer is the Amazon. On its own, it accounts for about one fifth of all the fresh water that the world's rivers pour into the oceans, far more than any other river.
Nile or Amazon?
In length, the dispute is with the Nile, in Africa. The two are roughly 6,500 to 7,000 kilometres long, and the result depends on where the source is considered to be, a question that geographers continue to debate.
The Amazon basin covers about 7 million square kilometres across several South American countries, most of it in Brazil.
There is no bridge over the main course of the Amazon River. Crossing is done by boat, and much of the transport in the region travels by river.
At the mouth, the force of the fresh water is so great that it advances many kilometres out to sea before mixing with the salt water.
The river receives water from more than a thousand tributaries, and some of them, such as the Negro and the Madeira, are among the largest rivers in the world. Near Manaus, the dark-watered Negro meets the muddy-watered Solimões, and the two run side by side without mixing for several kilometres.
