Question 7 of 10

Honey that is well stored can last many years without spoiling.

Why, in question 6: Swallowed chewing gum stays in the stomach for years.

It's a myth. Swallowed chewing gum does not stay in the stomach for years. Gum is not digested, but it passes through the intestines like other things the body does not use, and it leaves in a few days.

Where chewing gum comes from

The base of many older chewing gums was chicle, a tree sap from Central America used for centuries by the Maya and Aztecs. Today, most gums use synthetic bases.

Modern chewing gum became popular at the end of the 19th century in the United States, and soon gained flavors and sugar. Sugar-free versions use sweeteners such as xylitol.

Swallowing a piece of chewing gum now and then usually causes no problem, but swallowing many at once, especially in the case of young children, can block the intestine. That is why the recommendation is to throw it away after chewing.

Chewing sugar-free gum after meals increases saliva production, which helps clean the teeth, but it does not replace brushing and flossing.
