Question 9: the correct answer is Jaguar. Got it right? Score 1 point.
Question 10 of 10
How long, on average, does an African elephant's pregnancy last?
Why, in question 9: What is the largest feline in the Americas?
The answer is the jaguar. It is the largest feline in the Americas and the third largest in the world, behind the tiger and the lion. The puma can be as long as it is, but it is lighter, and the ocelot and the margay are much smaller.
The strongest bite among felines
The jaguar has one of the strongest bites among felines relative to its size. Instead of attacking only the neck, like other big cats, it often bites straight through the skull of its prey, and it can crack the shells of turtles and tortoises.
It lives in forests, savannahs (cerrado) and flooded areas, and the Pantanal and the Amazon are among the best places to see it. Unlike most cats, the jaguar likes water, swims well, and even hunts caimans.
Black jaguars are of the same species. The dark coat comes from an excess of pigment, melanism, and, up close and in the right light, you can still see the rosettes in the fur.
The jaguar once ranged from the southern United States to northern Argentina. Today it has lost much of that territory, and in Brazil it is considered vulnerable to extinction, mainly due to the destruction of forests and conflicts with ranchers.
