A body that works nonstop
While you read this page, the heart beats, the lungs exchange air, the liver processes nutrients and millions of cells are replaced, all without you having to think about it.
Much of this work is coordinated by the autonomic nervous system, which adjusts breathing, heartbeat and digestion according to what the body is doing, from sleep to a run.
Many of these functions follow an internal clock of about 24 hours, the circadian rhythm, which influences sleep, hunger and even body temperature throughout the day.
