Question 7 of 10

What is the largest bird in the world?

Why, in question 6: Which of these animals is NOT an insect?

The answer is spider. Insects have six legs and a body divided into three parts: head, thorax and abdomen. A spider has eight legs and a body in two parts, and belongs to another group, the arachnids, together with scorpions and ticks.

Insects, arachnids and relatives

Insects and spiders are part of a larger group, the arthropods, animals with an exoskeleton and jointed legs. Crustaceans, such as crabs and shrimp, also belong to this group.

Another difference is in the antennae: almost all insects have a pair of them, while spiders have none. Many spiders have eight simple eyes, whereas insects usually have two compound eyes, made up of hundreds or thousands of small lenses.

Insects are the animal group with the most described species, over 1 million, and beetles alone number hundreds of thousands. Whoever chose beetle got the question wrong, but pointed to the champions of diversity.

Almost all spiders produce silk, but not all of them spin webs to catch prey. Some hunt by chasing their prey or waiting in hiding, and use silk for other things, such as lining their shelter or protecting their eggs.
