Question 10 of 10

What is the capital of Kazakhstan?

Why, in question 9: What is the capital of Pakistan?

The answer is Islamabad. Karachi, on the coast, is the largest city and was Pakistan's first capital, but the government moved to Islamabad, a planned city in the north of the country built from the 1960s onwards.

A capital designed from scratch

When Pakistan became independent in 1947, Karachi was chosen as the capital. In 1959, the government decided to build a new capital in the north, next to the city of Rawalpindi, which served as a temporary capital while the works advanced.

The plan for Islamabad was drawn up by the Greek urban planner Constantinos Doxiadis. He divided the city into sectors, each with its own schools, shops and green areas, identified by letters and numbers.

At the foot of the Margalla Hills stands the Faisal Mosque, completed in 1986 and one of the largest in the world. The design, by a Turkish architect, was inspired by a Bedouin tent.

Karachi remains the main economic centre and the country's largest port. Lahore, the second largest city, is known for its gardens and for monuments from the Mughal Empire era.
