Question 4 of 10

What is the capital of Turkey?

Why, in question 3: What is the capital of Brazil?

The answer is Brasília. Rio de Janeiro was the capital for almost two centuries, and São Paulo is the country's largest city, but since 1960 the federal government has operated in Brasília, on the Central Plateau.

A city built in a few years

The idea of moving the capital to the interior is old. The first Constitution of the Republic, from 1891, already set aside an area on the Central Plateau for the future capital, but the move only left paper decades later.

Brasília was inaugurated on April 21, 1960, under President Juscelino Kubitschek, after construction lasting less than four years. The city's plan is by urban planner Lúcio Costa, and the main buildings are by architect Oscar Niemeyer.

Seen from above, the central area resembles an airplane or a bird with its wings spread. The complex was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1987, one of the few in the world built in the 20th century.

Before Rio de Janeiro, Brazil's first capital was Salvador, in Bahia, from 1549 to 1763. São Paulo, the country's largest city, has more than 11 million inhabitants, about four times the population of Brasília.
