Question 7 of 10

What is the capital of Vietnam?

Why, in question 6: What is the capital of Morocco?

The answer is Rabat. Casablanca is the largest city and the main economic center of Morocco, and Marrakech is the most sought-after by tourists, but the king and the government are based in Rabat, on the Atlantic coast.

The imperial cities

Throughout history, four cities served as capitals of different Moroccan dynasties: Fez, Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat. To this day, they are known as the imperial cities of Morocco.

Rabat became the capital in 1912, when the country became a French protectorate, and continued in that role after independence in 1956. Part of the city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.

One of Rabat's symbols is the Hassan Tower, the minaret of a mosque begun at the end of the 12th century that was never completed. Casablanca, in turn, has the Hassan II Mosque, inaugurated in 1993, with a minaret of more than 200 meters (about 690 feet).

Fez is home to the University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859. UNESCO and Guinness cite it as the oldest continuously operating educational institution in the world.
