Question 10 of 10
Which planet has the largest number of known moons?
Why, in question 9: Who was the first human being to go into space?
The answer is Yuri Gagarin. On 12 April 1961, the Soviet cosmonaut completed one full orbit of the Earth aboard Vostok 1, in a flight of about 108 minutes. Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became famous for walking on the Moon in 1969.
The Space Race
Gagarin's flight took place in the midst of the dispute between the Soviet Union and the United States for leadership in space. The Soviets had already launched the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, in 1957.
John Glenn, another option in the question, was the first American to orbit the Earth, in 1962. In 1998, at the age of 77, he returned to space aboard a space shuttle.
The first woman in space was the Soviet Valentina Tereshkova, in 1963. The first Brazilian was Marcos Pontes, who spent about ten days in space in 2006, most of it at the International Space Station.
Gagarin is often remembered for the remark that the Earth is blue, said upon seeing it from above.
