Question 6: the correct answer is Milky Way. Did you get it right? Mark 1 point.
Question 7 of 10
How long does sunlight take to reach Earth?
Why, in question 6: What is the name of the galaxy where the Solar System is located?
The answer is the Milky Way. The name comes from the whitish band that appears in the dark sky, far from city lights: it is the combined light of billions of stars in the galaxy's disk, seen from within.
Our address in the Universe
The Milky Way is a spiral galaxy about 100,000 light-years in diameter. The Solar System lies on one of its arms, about 26,000 light-years from the center.
At the center of the galaxy there is a giant black hole, called Sagittarius A*, with about 4 million times the mass of the Sun. The first image of it was released in 2022.
Andromeda, the large neighboring galaxy, is about 2.5 million light-years away and is approaching us. The two may collide in a few billion years.
The other options are also galaxies. The Magellanic Clouds are small galaxies that accompany the Milky Way and are visible to the naked eye mainly from the southern hemisphere, and the Sombrero galaxy is much farther away, about 30 million light-years.
