Question 6 of 10
What is the capital of Morocco?
Why, in question 5: What is the capital of New Zealand?
The answer is Wellington. Auckland is the country's largest city, with about a third of the population, but the capital is in Wellington, at the southern tip of the North Island.
Closer to the center of the country
Auckland was the capital of the colony from 1841 to 1865. That year, the seat of government was moved to Wellington, which lies midway between the two main islands and made things easier for those coming from the South Island.
The city sits on the shore of Cook Strait, the channel separating the two islands, and is famous for the strong winds that blow through there. Wellington is often cited as the capital of the southernmost country in the world.
One of the Parliament buildings has such an unusually round shape that it earned the nickname Beehive. It is where the offices of the prime minister and the ministers are located.
New Zealand also has a place in the history of democracy: in 1893, it was the first self-governing country where women won the right to vote in national elections.
