Question 9 of 10

What is the capital of Pakistan?

Why, in question 8: What is the capital of Nigeria?

The answer is Abuja. Lagos, on the coast, is Nigeria's largest city and was the capital until 1991, when the government moved to Abuja, a planned city in the centre of the country.

A capital in the middle of the country

The decision to build a new capital was made in 1976. Lagos was growing too fast and sat in a corner of the territory, while Abuja would be in the centre, closer to all regions.

The choice of a neutral location also mattered: the area was not the stronghold of any of the country's largest ethnic groups, which helped avoid disputes. The official move took place on 12 December 1991.

Near the city stands Zuma Rock, a huge granite monolith that appears on the 100-naira note, the country's currency. It is so striking in the landscape that it is often called the gateway to Abuja.

Lagos remains the main economic centre and the largest port in Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa, with more than 200 million inhabitants.
