Question 6 of 10
What is the name of the galaxy where the Solar System is located?
Why, in question 5: In what year did human beings first set foot on the Moon?
The answer is 1969. On July 20 of that year, the Apollo 11 mission landed on the Moon, and Neil Armstrong was the first to step onto the surface, followed by Buzz Aldrin. Michael Collins stayed in orbit, in the command module.
Eight days of travel
The entire mission, from liftoff to the return to the Pacific Ocean, lasted about eight days. The astronauts spent just over two hours walking outside the lunar module.
They brought back about 21 kilograms of lunar rocks and soil, which helped scientists understand the origin of the Moon.
After Apollo 11, five other missions landed on the Moon. Apollo 17, in December 1972, was the last of the program to carry people to the surface.
The landing broadcast was watched live by hundreds of millions of people around the world, one of the largest television audiences up to that time.
Twelve astronauts, all Americans, walked on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. The modules and equipment they left behind are still there, and mirrors installed on the surface are still used to measure the distance between the Earth and the Moon with lasers.
